The advent of three important institutions
namely BHEL, OFT and REC and the development of the Kailasapuram Township
resulted in the expansion of Thiruverumbur and an increase in population.
People felt the deed to establish a college in order to provide higher
education to the children of workers in town and of the landlords in
the villages around the area.
In October 1972,a college committee was
formed and it started functioning with the then District Collector, M.T.P.Bharathi
as the president and
the then MLA Mr.K.Kamatchi as the secretary and Treasurer.
The University
of Madras granted permission to start two groups in the Pre-University
Course during 1973-74.known as Dr.Navalar Nedunchezian
Govt.Arts College.it was taken over by the Government of Tamilnadu
in December 1973.During 1974-75,permission to start in Pre-University
course a Group on National science and BA Degree Course in History
was granted by the University.the foundation was laid by Dr.Kalaingar,
the then chief Minister of Tamilnadu, to build the college in the space
donated by BHEL.With the permission of the University,the Job-oriented
Degree Course in Corporate Secretary ship was started in 1975-77.The
college has been functioning as a co-educational institution.
The College shifted to the permanent buildings constructed in the campus
opposite to kailasapuram from 18.1977 onwards. Degree Course in Chemistry
had also been started in 1978-79.
B.A.Degree Course in English Literature
and B.Com Degree Course in commerce were started in 1979-80 and 1987-88
respectively. All the
degree courses got permanently affiliated to the University in 1992-93
and in the same year, the college received the UGC grant under the
VIII Five year plan.
From 2002 the college became a constituent college
of the Bharathidasan University, Trichy as per the Government Order.
In 2002 Self-financing
courses in BBA, BCA, B.Litt, PGDCA and M.Com had also been started. |
