The Golden Rock (GOC) railway workshop has taken a leap toward a new venture to be the “first-of-its-kind in Indian Railways”. They have started producing vermicompost, briquettes and bio gas to promote solid waste management. This has been started by disposing wastes of dry leaves, non-recyclable paper and food waste, generated from the premises spread nearly 200 acres. This is used as organic manure in gardens maintained by the GOC. So far all these waste were burned in an open ground and now as burning is controlled to prevent pollution this new technique has been adopted. As per railway norms wooden packing materials that are unused are not saleable and so they are used in this manner. Three people have been deputed to carry out this process in an efficient manner.
