Large number of people have started availing the scheme to regularize unapproved plots after the Tamil Nadu government recently extended the deadline. It has been extended for the third consecutive time by another six months. The Trichy City Corporation (TCC) has collected Rs 4.50 crore as development charge for regularization of 590 plots so far, mostly processed through the recent special camp. The civic body is planning to conduct more such camps before the deadline in November. The special camps to regularize the unapproved plots held last week witnessed good response from people living on the outskirts of the city such as Ariyamangalam, E Pudur and Srirangam. Since the awareness among locals to regularize their plots is picking up, plan has been made mto conduct yet another camp this week. Official sources said that plots that were sold and registered before October 20, 2016 could be regularized through the move that was extended thrice, recently in May 2018. As far as TCC is concerned, official sources said that there are about 20,000 plots to be regularized of which a majority fall under the wards that were added to city limits in 2011. People who are desperate to sell their plots are making best use of this scheme as unapproved plots could not be sold. The corporation is collecting Rs 500 per sq.m. as development charge for regularization whereas the state government charges Rs 100 per square meter as regularization charge.
